about

I started to record samples in 1997. I had minimal gear to properly go about it, but my love of hip-hop and dance music was reaching critical mass. Strangely enough - it was also around this time that planet earth was experiencing a pandemic of technical fear known as "Y2K". When I bought my first computer from Circuit City the sticker read: "I'm OK for Y2K!". This was no joke. I had just moved from Muscle Shoals to Nashville and watched families liquidate their life savings to buy grain silos, underground gas pumps, and more guns than any one person should own. As my environment was bracing for apocalypse, I was embracing this new, non-linear art form. The entire world felt like it had an expiration date, so I wanted to sample everything.
My grandmother (father's mom) had just passed away, and I felt like naming a new project after her and capitalizing one random letter to be super arty: fraNcis.
For two years I discovered how to unlearn most of what I thought I'd learned about recording on tape. My computer was a new playing field. Linear and non-linear worlds were colliding. True discovery!
The year 2000 came and went and nothing blew up or stopped working. The clock just ticked by. Shows were getting booked now, too. fraNcis was live on stage, which meant that I rapped a lot, squealed much, threw dollar bills at people, and demanded haters leave before any sounds were made. It was a fiasco hotter than tabasco.
On the turn of 2001, I got a phone call from Ian Mackaye of Fugazi. They wanted fraNcis to play some shows with them on The Argument tour. It was the peak of a two year band project that allowed me to flex all sorts of creative muscles I didn't even know I had. I'm happy I allowed myself that sort of abandon and have compiled the memories of this for you to listen to. Enjoy!

Sincerely,
Kevin
